Although both of her parents were voracious readers, filling their house with books - stacked on shelves and tables, piled on the floor, stuck in odd places like the refrigerator, or inside dresser drawers - young Meena hated books, and read them as little as possible. As someone who has taken to stacking excess books at the back of my closet, because my shelves are filled to capacity, I aki utalta a konyv:eket strongly with the household depicted here, and of course! The accompanying illustrations by Leanne Franson are full of fun, showing rooms bursting with books or characters from books, as the case may be. All in all The Girl Who Hated Bookswhile not the most outstanding picture-book I have picked up of late, is a solidly engaging title, one I would recommend to reluctant young readers, or to the adults in the lives who are anxious to strike that spark of bibliophilia in them. The writing is a bit uneven at times poetry here, prose there and the illustrations, while cute and effective, are not something I would have been drawn to of their own accord. And, yet I just felt my heart glowing when I finished this book! I just had to laugh in the beginning s I loved this little gem! I just had to laugh in the beginning since Meena is so against picking up a book since her parents love it so much and though I figured Meena would come to like reading, the journey there took a completely different route than I expected. It is so magical and fun! And there's a cute black konyv: A lany named Max, and he is so adorable even down to the crooked tail an atlas fell on it when he was little, poor kitty! Definitely recommended for book-lovers! It might also be of interest to those seeking books with characters of Indian descent, or those seeking Canadian picture books the author was born in India and moved to Toronto--the illustrator grew up in Saskatchewan and works in Montreal.
